One of the most impacting events that revolved around the Maori military was the Maori battalion. The Maori battalion unit was created in 1939 for New Zealand’s protection in the second world war. It was an infantry battalion to New Zealand.
The size was relatively normal, with 700-900 men - it was the 28th battalion and was attached to the 2nd New Zealand Division as an extra battalion that was later moved around amongst the infantry brigades.
Organized on a tribal basis, the iwis formed the different
companies (4). The battalion fought through Greek, North African, and Italian campaigns, and was considered a fairly great force. They also traveled to the United Kingdom, the middle east, and Crete.
Later, in the years around the 21st century, Maori people integrated themselves into the national military of New Zealand.
